This is a very special piece to me. I made it at a time I was struggling with my identity as the only artist in my family with no drawing skills. During crit, I was worried sick at how bad it was compared to the other drawings on the wall. The teacher told me, to my surprise, it's a great example of the simplest form of perspective: occlusion. The dots appear in the background because they are occluded by the white stripes, which appear in the midground because of the black lines, which appear in the foreground as they are not occluded. He treated my piece with the same amount of respect, appreciation, and validity as the art kid next to me who drew something on par with the Mona Lisa. No matter what the skill level of the student, he was able to find good things about their piece and offer room to improve. I try to be that person when I critique others.
